ASCII ki full form American Standard Code for Information Interchange होती है | ASCII को American National Standards Institute (ANSI) develop ने किया था |

यह इंटरनेट एवं कम्प्यूटर्स पर use की जाने वाली सबसे common text file फॉर्मेट होती है | ASCII मे हर एक alphabetic, numeric, or special करैक्टर को 7-bit binary number (a string of seven 0s or 1s) से रिप्रेजेंट किया जाता है | For Example - 'A' का ASCII कोड 65 होता है | 

ASCII format मे स्टोर होने वाली text files को ASCII files कहा जाता है| ज्यादातर Text editors and word processors डेटा को ऐसी फॉर्मेट मे स्टोर करने के capable होते है लकिन ये जरुरी नहीं की ASCII फॉर्मेट ही डिफ़ॉल्ट storage format हो | बहुत सारी डेटा फाइल्स जो की numeric based होती है वह ऐसी फॉर्मेट मे स्टोर नहीं होती है इसके साथ साथ जितने भी Executable programs की files होती है वे ऐसी फॉर्मेट मे स्टोर नहीं होती है | see below list which shows ASCII value for any character -
